“Great men have almost always shown themselves as ready to obey as they afterwards proved able to command.” -Lord Mahon

I came across this quote today and immediately thought of the importance a sentiment like this has played in my life. At my wedding while honoring those who raised me I shared a lesson that my dad taught me as I was growing up. I stated that my dad showed me the importance of knowing when to lead and when to follow. This is something that my dad never told me, he showed me. This quality of his has stuck with me ever since I was young and I try to implement it at every opportunity.

I think it is important that we are honest with ourselves about when it is appropriate to take the lead or instead follow someone who may be more suited for the moment. I can’t ever remember my dad pretending he knew something when he didn’t. Believe me, by doing this you can save yourself a lot of headaches later so you aren’t forced to go back and ask for help. Being able to let others lead can also create many more learning opportunities. Watch what others do. Implement their successes into your life. Learn from their mistakes to minimize your own.

By following today we can be ready to lead tomorrow.
